with the 4/23 (Mech) 25th Infantry Division, and came home in
July of 1968
"I remember running into Lanny in Cu Chi South
Vietnam. It was such a great experience running
into someone from your hometown. I really don't think Baytown knows how many soldiers went to Vietnam. I also ran into Dennis Underwood who was a
chopper pilot, Ronnie Thompson, who was a door gunner
for the 25th Infantry Division. After finding
these guys it was like home again, but the bad part
was we had lost our innocence. Welcome home all
of you brothers."

"We
lost the remainder of our youth and innocence during TET.
Knowing what was really the motive behind that
so-called war makes me wonder about all the reasons given
for the present Gulf Wars. The pictures of David show how
skinny all us guys will never be again. I would like to know
those of our class that didn't make it home."

"The wars
that were fought by our fathers and our grandfathers were
not wars that they chose to fight, but when the United
States joined into these conflicts young men were called to
serve. Our ancestors answered the call to duty and
they had the support of the entire nation.
Viet Nam
was not a popular war, but it was the war of our time and it
is considered our war. As returning veterans we did
not always find the appreciation for our efforts.
Today there is a greater appreciation for the men and women
who served in the ugly war. Those who served carried
on the tradition of young American men through the ages."

"I ran
into a couple of guys from Baytown while on R&R
in the Philippines and it was great to see someone from
home.
For
me, serving in a war zone gave a new meaning to the term
"You can't go home again". I was able to go
home, but it was never the same. The war experience took
my innocence forever, but it also created a bond to other
veterans that will last for the rest of my life."
